However tragedy ensued on the eve of the departure when Kendra Dumbledore was killed by an outburst of Ariana's uncontrollable magic, leaving Albus the head of his own broken family. Though he was no longer alive at the time, it was through Dumbledore's manipulations that Voldemort was ultimately defeated and peace restored to the wizarding world. Though Dumbledore eventually defeated Grindelwald in a duel, the circumstances surrounding the death of his younger sister stayed with him and influenced his future choices and decisions. He even turned down the position of Minister for Magic as he felt he should not be trusted with that kind of power.
